Sr. Isabel Garza, FMA
How did you know that God was calling you to Religious Life?
I grew up in a Salesian Sisters School. I loved being with the Sisters, but I never thought of becoming one until I was in the 7th Grade. My teacher asked us one day who wanted to become a Sister and go to the missions. Most of us raised our hands in jest, but for me it was the turning point in my vocation. Since that day, I wanted to become a Sister and belong to Jesus forever.
What attracted you to the Salesian Sisters?
The Salesian Sisters were always happy to be with us. I loved when they played with us and when they enjoyed each other’s company. When I was in school, I sensed the presence of Jesus and Mary everywhere. We had many opportunities for prayer, for entertainment and service. Devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and Mary Help of Christians was very strong. The Sisters’ chapel was always open for anyone who wanted to go and pray.
Any favorite saint quotes or bible verses?
This is one of my favorite quotes: “For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.” 2 Tim 1:7
Who are your favorite saints?
St. John Bosco and St. Mary Mazzarello are my favorite saints. I learned so much about them growing up in a Salesian school. My other favorite saint is St. Therese of the Child Jesus. I read her life when I was twelve years old and she definitely inspired me to become a Sister. Her love for Jesus and Mary deepened my desire to belong to Jesus completely.
What’s your advice for young people?
Don’t be afraid to try religious life if you feel God is calling you. It doesn’t hurt to try. Only God gives that call and it is up to you to follow it. You will find out how happy and fulfilled you will be.
